New fabric and new inspiration
Working on the last quilt sparked a renewed interest in appliqué for me. After looking at a couple of pattern and technique sources I decided on a Kim Diehl book, Simple Appliqué. This was a perfect choice, wonderful instructions ( I need to be reaquainted with appliqué ) and a pattern for a beautiful quilt that consists of 4 panels.
Since before my pennyrugs days, I have loved the look and the process of appliqué quilts. Stitching penny rugs was one of my favourite needleart forms. But remembering a book I had when I was in my twenties ( not that long ago ! ) Ha Ha , and exploring needlework and just how I wanted to apply my needle…we didn’t have the Internet then , it was either books or magazines or someone who would teach you. Between my grandmother and mother I learned about knitting , hand embroidery and basic quilting but I seem to be on my own about the appliqué work…it really intrigued me but my first attempts were sad looking ones but I believe everything comes full circle….eventually :). That’s where I am now. The prep work is tedious, cutting the template pieces out of freezer paper. Then the fabric. But I love the stitching of each piece onto its permanent home.
Pressing the edges over and making the stems and arranging the leaves. I really did toss the idea back and forth between machine stitching and hand stitching the appliques pieces and hand stitching won 🙂 I’m very pleased with the process so far , it doesn’t take metres and metres of fabric, just bits here and there. Sometimes a 1/4 of a metre is all that is needed when I see a fabric in rich colours and patterns. I can see the fabric stash growing a little lol
The stems, leaves and blossoms are stitched on the first panel which is 52cm (20 1/2″). This will be the first stage of my journey into appliqué quilting. 🙂
Thanks for dropping by, have a great weekend crafting at what makes you happy.
Another day and another finish… (doing my old woman happy dance) LOL now there’s something I won’t get out of my head ha ha 🙂
This little project started back in Dec, when I received a gift in the mail from one of my blog buddies Avis at Oh Sew Tempting
A beautiful hand made card and a charm pack of pretty blue and white prints. They are so adorable . Thank you again Avis ! Now , my dilemma , what to do with them ? I really wanted the project to do this pretty pack of prints justice and it wasn’t long before I had my inspiration.
I had been wanted to machine embroidery these adorable bunnies in tea cups on a table runner or table cover, something to brighten up the kitchen. Between working on the pinwheel quilt and the BOM this year, why not keep with that theme? I was getting brave sewing squares and making triangles and hour glass blocks 🙂 Of course I had to plan this out, I did not want to run shy of blocks. I folded the fabric this way and that and turned the pieces around trying to get a good visual. I do scribble on paper and all that but there is nothing like having the fabric in hand when I am planning or designing. Its also what I do with the embroidery threads, I get a handful of spools and put them together to see if they and going mix or separate like oil and water.
I had plenty of print blocks and white pieces …whew:) I did add some white around each block and along the sides. Now at this point I had a moment of indecision about the binding and bending Avis’ ear a little lol I got back to sewing. 🙂 I think the solid blue binding set everything off nicely and I got a chance to use the binding tool on the Bernina so its a plus all around 🙂
Me being worried about running out of fabric.. ha , I had enough left to make 4 mug mats with one each of the print to spare and 2 or 3 white pieces. those will be kept safe 😉 I am a hoarder of keepsakes you know.
Tea anyone ? Thanks so much for dropping by and I hope you have a great week crafting at what makes you happy.
Happy Dancing ….June Borders are on the the quilt !!! YEAH!.. and the 2016 Craftsy BOM Garden Charm Quilt top is complete I am so happy with how it all turned out. So much colour , it also help me put a big dent into my stash 🙂 I probably won’t get it quilted until fall..ish 🙂 but that’s ok I have a lot to fill up the summer months . This was a wonderful online class and Lynette Jenson did a great job. The class materials were very clear and her instructions were easy to understand. The beginning was here in January and grew to a huge quilt of 92″ X 83″ (233.68cm X 210.82cm) I hope I got the metric right. I had to make a couple of adjustments with the borders since I was using from my stash and wouldn’t you know it, I didn’t have quite enough black to cut the outside border to match the class materials. Which is really ok because there is plenty of overhang with this quilt. I have learned a lot from this class about patchwork. patterns that involved triangles and techniques that I may not have tried otherwise or muddled through terribly lol I’m one of those people that if you tell me I will forget but show me I will remember . I love that old saying and it definitely fits 🙂 I am so happy with this quilt top I really want to make another one…not right away of course lol its just that I enjoyed the learning of it and the great results.
Thank you so much for dropping in. I hope you have great week crafting at what makes you happy.
Beautiful May, and with May is the BOM and on time !! Now isn’t that great lol I had to burn the mid night oil to get this one done and I’m glad I did. With the long weekend coming up and company coming 🙂 I had to straighten up the sewing room, I think I may have to bunk someone in there lol. I seem to spread out my projects when I’m working and this is a project that needs a lot of room !
I tried to get a good pic of this months work but the wind just won’t stop blowing, well not until today when I don’t have an assistant lol and when the wind isn’t blowing the black flies are biting 😦 so its not a good idea to complain about the wind too much.
Here is the windy stage of May..The Modified Piano Key border. 112 – 2.5″ X 8.5″(6cm X 22cm) strips and 224 – 2.5″ (6cm) squares, plus the Ohio Star Blocks that were made back in February . Right now the quilt measures 68.5″ X 76.5″ (174cm X 194.3cm)
This project started back in January with the centre of the quilt and Ive been building out each month with the free Craftsy class 2016 Craftsy Block of The Month. I have put quite a dent into my stash but I really think I could get another one of theses out of my stash 😮 lol There are 2 more borders to go and June will see those finished.
Sew…until then…Thanks so much for dropping by and have a great weekend crafting at what makes you happy.
April ?? more like May !! WOW I feel like the rabbit in Alice in Wonderland , running around ..”I’m late I’m late I’m so late” lol.Just when I think I can concentrate on sewing, life happens…oh well, I’m all caught up now and actually a little ahead whew.
Aprils Blocks were more detailed than the original plan because of course I have to change the plan 🙂
The class instructions were to cut out the pieces to be appliquéd with raw edges and machine stitched on with a zig zag stitch. Thats not the look I wanted for my quilt. I have seen this technique done before and after some time you can see little fuzzy edges of the fabric peaking out through the zig zag stitching and the second reason is I haven’t done a lot of zig zag stitching around edges and I didn’t want to do a sloppy job, so, I sew , hand stitching the pieces on to be more exact 🙂 and it was a lot of sewing but I enjoyed it and that’s important , right?
Instead of the raw edge I cut out the pieces with a bit of extra fabric so I could press it under. I used the thin heat & bond as the instructions called for but in the future I won’t be doing that. It made the pieces stiff and I could feel the resistance with the hand stitching.
8 panels total and I stitched the appliqué before I had sewn the blocks together (better handling) 🙂
And here we have 2016 April’s BOM.. finally 🙂
In case you would like to take a look back and March’s BOM click (here)
I’m super happy about getting this done and I have already finished May’s to be posted very soon.
Thank you so much for dropping by… I hope you have a great weekend crafting at what makes you happy ..
Doing a happy dance here over pinwheels and hoping I don’t throw a hip 😉 I’m pretty pleased with how the pink pinwheels turned out…I quilted on the light pinks and left the dark to puff out. I have already washed the quilt as I used quilters chalk to help guide me as I quilted.
And as I mentioned in the last post about the pink pinwheels, I had originally chose a dark border..well that didn’t work out so onto the internet and see what I could find in a matching batik..not a good plan…but…I got very lucky and found a small print that went perfectly with all the other fabrics. Believe me..my lesson has been learned 🙂
I can’t wait to give this quilt to N, she has been very patient with old Mom lol I definitely need more practice in the free motion quilting, but with every quilt ( not that I make many lol) I think I’m improving a little . Its quite a physical job too, wrestling with a quilt! some days I win and some days, I take a break 🙂
Thanks so much for dropping in… I hope you have a great week and weekend crafting at what makes you happy.
Its been a busy month here and the time has gone by so fast ! Not that I procrastinate at all 😉 but it just might be that I have a few irons in the fire lol ..Don’t we all?
This is the 3rd stage of the BOM…it started here in January and stage 2 in Feb. which also included the Ohio stars for this month.
The border for this month is called the Modified Pinwheel Block
A lot of small pieces, something else I don’t usually do. I am really stepping out of my comfort zone of this one 🙂 and it helps
that it’s an online class. Its encouraging that others are stitching this quilt..in their fabrics at the same time..which reminds me I have to pop over to Craftsy and post there too 🙂
and March’s BOM is complete
🙂 The sun was coming into the sewing room this morning and making it very bright..a good time for pics, so I hope they look as bright to you as they do to me…my pics aren’t always nice and bright lol
I’m pretty excited about April BOM ..there is going to be appliqué work !!
Thank so much for dropping by and taking a look see 🙂 I hope you have a great week crafting at what makes you happy….
