Sew-outs, yarn and a lot of snow!

Hello everyone, I hope you have had a creative and productive week at crafting. It’s been a little bit of this and that in my sewing room. I finished up one pair of socks(sorry no photo) and started another. This Embossed Leaves Pattern, I have knit up before and that makes the knitting go along much smoother for me when a pattern is familiar  🙂  The yarn is Knit Picks Comfy Fingering in the colour Sea Foam. Its 75% Pima Cotton and 25% Acrylic. Now I would like to take a moment to say..that I usually mention a product or web site or brand in my posts.. I in no way am making any kind of advertisement for any of these mentioned. I like to think I am passing on information to fellow crafters. When reading other’s blogs, haven’t we all thought at some point … “where could I find that?” or “what brand of yarn is that ?” I do like to share info especially regarding the machine embroidery. Its only from stumbling upon the sites and info I do have that has gotten me where my work is today. Where to buy a good quality machine embroidery thread and the stabilizers and even good quality designs. Hard as it is to believe its not just at the corner fabric shop 🙂 seeing how I am in a rural area. Sure there are the small fabric shops with yarn but the selection just isn’t there. Unfortunately a lot of the yarns or fibres are the novelty kind. I would have to say that 60% of the sock yarn I have has been purchased online, and honestly I thought I would never say that . I haven’t yet bought fabric online, I guess I’m hesitating about that one, I like to see and feel the fabric before I make a purchase. But here I am shopping and blogging 🙂

so …on with the show lol  cotton socks in Sea Foam

and a couple of sew-outs from the sketches collection at Embroidery Library . I love this eagle sketch and the train sketch caught the eye of my Mr. Mister 🙂 They will both be nice as framed pieces, once I find the right frame.

I’m not sure yet how I’m going to finish up this hand pump, stitched out in taupe colours, but I really liked it and wanted to see how it would stitch up..time wise that is. I like this particular line of designs (also from Embroidery Library) because they can be stitched to match colours of anyone decor. Another accent pillow or wall hanging and I can’t resist quilted table mats!

Taupe Hand Pump

And of course is time to stitch a Christmas design(from Embroiderydesigns.com) or two..hmmm maybe a country theme accent pillow OR a quilted table mat? I’m also thinking about Tea dyeing the piece. Sometimes I just stitch designs out and wait for the right inspiration to hit me. I like these types of designs too because some of them look as if they have been hand stitched. Now to the hand embroiderer I know you can tell in an instant 😉  I used to stitch a lot of hand embroidery and all in all I know there is nothing like hand embroidery, I think these designs… to me are reminiscent of that period in my needlework history  🙂

Country Christmas 1

And speaking of inspiration hitting me, I dug out some fabric that has been wanting to be a quilt..yes winter is here at least its here in North East Alberta ..lol  6 more inches of snow and cold cold temperatures..minus 27 to minus 30 Friday night..   BRRR  I am NOT ready for this lol  And that could be why I am thinking “Quilt”  I’m thinking 9 patch with a solid block staggered across and a couple of small borders..yup.. this will be something….else for me to post progress of this winter.

Thanks for dropping in and I hope you have a great week crafting at what makes you happy.

Rhythm of Knitting

Hello everyone, I hope you are enjoying life and your crafts. Its been pretty busy around the Needleworks household, with yard work and the newest renos. But I always find time for my needlework. Whether its machine embroidery or cross stitch or knitting. And this morning its knitting. The sun is coming around the corner of the house and there is a warm sunny corner on the deck, just right for sitting and sipping my coffee and working on the latest pair of socks. My Mr. Mister asked me one day, why I was still knitting socks when summer is coming?  I answered , because there is yarn my dear 🙂 lol He nodded and smiled, knowing just what I meant 🙂 At the risk of repeating myself, I love to knit and I love knitting socks. They are portable, some are complex patterns and some are supper easy, and as much as I enjoy the complex patterns, sometimes I like to sit and not think about what I’m knitting. Like the socks I am working on now.

The pattern is simply Knit 4 , Purl 4. and around and around we go. I find with any pattern after the first few rows ( 4 or 5) I get into a rhythm of knitting. I don’t have to count 1 2 3 4 and bring my yarn to the back or front, it happens automatically, allowing the mind to wonder…but not too far lol or plan the chores of the day ahead or just relax into a meditated state and in this case time gets away from me 🙂 As it should sometimes. I find if I’m working on a new pattern, one I haven’t knit before and its quite detailed that I need a quiet spot to concentrate and other times I can watch TV or carry on a conversation while I’m knitting and hardly look down. But it is also nice to have a quiet moment with a easy pattern. How do you other knitters approach your craft?  And do you like to use metal needles or wooden ones?  My favs are bamboo but for the stretch yarn I am using in these socks I find the yarn slides over the metal needles best.

I had/ have very achey ( if thats a word) hands. I actually gave up knitting for a few years 😦 when I read that bamboo knitting needles were easier to knit with if you had problems with yours hands. So I gave it a try, my hands still ache but I can enjoy knitting longer then I used to when I was using metal needles. It’s pretty safe to say I don’t knit many stretch socks lol But sitting in the sun makes it that much easier and enjoyable .

Now that the coffee is gone and I have gotten my knitting and writing fix, its time to push a broom and then get outside again..its looks like its going to be a gorgeous 21C degrees today and there is still lots to do.

Thanks for dropping by and have a fabulous week and weekend.

Izz 🙂

A New Pair of Socks….

Hello everyone, I hope you are all having a wonderful crafty week. Its a little rainy here today, but that’s ok, we really need the rain. I should title this post the saga of the socks lol. I had this pair 98% knitted, yes I did , and I unraveled them 😦  I wasn’t happy with the shape of the foot and how they were knitting up. I had a funny feeling from the start…66 CO sts seemed too many to me. I won’t criticize the pattern, it just wasn’t right for me. And well I had actually run out of yarn…. by a toe . I don’t mean one toe lol no but a sock toe area…I couldn’t believe it.. so I was faced with either find a contrast colour and make the toes of both socks different or unravel and start over. I also tried a cable design along the side of the sock as the pattern called for, but with this colourway, the cable was not showing up as well as I had hoped 😦

So the unraveling began. I went back to my fav basic sock pattern. When in a pinch eh ? CO 56 sts   🙂 and away I go. The other pattern called for K2, P1 for the leg and instep and I liked that part of it. For the basic pattern I went with K2, P2 for the leg and instep, and when all was said and done, I had yarn left over ..YEAH! lol

I used Koigu Painter’s Palette Premium Merino, 100% merino wool. The basic sock pattern took 2 -50g skeins. ( 160m/175yds) This colour way is P450 248 and made in Canada ! 🙂 a very nice yarn.

I made these especially for riding 🙂  The leg is 16.5 cm (6.5″) long, just the right length to fold down over the top of my boots. We are ready to roll … where’s my helmet lol

Thanks for dropping by and I hope you have a fantastic week and weekend

Socks Of March

Hi everyone, well March has flown by fast with lots of stitching and knitting. For some it came in like a lion and for some like a lamb, and for me I would say March is going out like a lamb ..aka wool socks 🙂 I didn’t get two pair of socks knitted this month like I had hoped. It was a bit ambitious of me to think I could get two pair knitted per month along with all the other projects I have on the go. But I am just as happy to have this pair finished before my deadline. I was getting down to the wire and I was sure I would run out of yarn too. But in the end I had a decent little ball of yarn left when I was finished knitting, just enough for mending if I need it some day :).

Favorite Socks

Favorite Socks

The pattern is called Retro Rib Socks by Evelyn A. Clark . From this book “Favorite Socks , 25 Timeless Designs from Interweave”. I have already knit a few pair from this book.

I knit with “Socks That Rock” from Bluemoon Fiber Arts. I used the Shaded Solids Colour ” Spores” in light weight . An excellent sock yarn and my new favourite 🙂 it has a very nice weight to it and it feels cool to the touch.

I love the way the knitting lays so I took a few photos.

Hubby was quite happy to model his new socks 🙂

I’m going to continue on with the other pair I planned for this month. I’m excited to see the pattern in the yarn since I haven’t knit with this brand before.

Here’s a sneak peak of the pattern I’m going to use, it’s also from the Favorite Sock Book that I mentioned above.

February Socks

Hi everyone, I’m just a bit late with February’s socks, but as they say, better late then never. And then there is the issue about losing 2 or 3 days in February! I want a recount !! … lol  oh well I got the socks finished and thats the main thing. 🙂

so lets get on with the photos shall we?

Dark Grey Socks

Dark Grey Socks

These are the work socks I made in the first part of the month. They are 100% wool. The main part of the sock is knit from Briggs & Little charcoal sock wool. And the tops and toes are from Patons Classic Wool yarn – white.

Firecracker Socks

Firecracker Socks

Pair number 2 are a bright pair I call firecracker, but the name of the colour is actually Patons Kroy, Paint Box. They are a blend of 75% washable wool and 25% nylon. I had Patons Kroy charcoal left over from another pair of socks and used it on the top and toe of the socks.

March Sock Yarn

This is what I have planned for this month.

I hope you like February’s Socks and thanks for stopping by. Happy stitching and have a great week

Just Socks

Hi Everyone…hope you have had fun crafting your skills lately. As the title of this post suggests …just socks…but anyone who knits or wears home made socks knows they are not “just” socks. Myself? I love socks and I love knitting socks, I also like buying sock yarn. I’m like a kid in a candy store when I go into a shop and there is a wall of sock yarn..so many colours and textures..I stand in awe of it..lol..no exaggeration 🙂 I also have my favourite online places to buy yarn too. When I can’t find what I’m looking for in the stores, and my fav yarn store is a day trip to the city. Sure there are small local shops that carry a bit of sock yarn but sometimes I like to get something really special. Now, have you ever thought to go through your stash to see what is in that large bag in the closet?  I did, and well it was quite the surprise! If you know what I mean by heavy clear plastic zippered bags that you get a nice blanket in or a comforter? Well I have one that I have been stuffing sock yarn into as I bring the beautiful balls of colour and softness home, you know ..for that pair of socks I will knit next week, and the week after that and ….lol .I have 100% wool and wool and silk blend and wool and acrylic. Which made me realize I really need to start knitting faster..

stash of sock yarn

stash of sock yarn

I have made a challenge for myself. 2 pair of socks per month, in between the other projects I have laid out for myself. Some are requests and some are of my own doing 🙂 I do like to keep busy. I have almost finished the second pair of socks for January. The first pair were the blue socks that I posted in Toastie Tooties and this second pair are the Grey sock photo you see at the bottom of the same post. I feel excited with all these challenges..The SAL with Avis and Claire and now the “Sock” challenge. Hey , one needs to keep busy with their hobbies when you live in north west Canada and since I’m not an out doors winter sports kind of person, my indoor hobbies suit me fine !

more and more yarn

more and more yarn

I have my favourite sock patterns in the knitting basket as well as some news ones. I found a great booklet in my travels that I couldn’t resist… see the problem ??  lol and while I was paging through the booklet a few other skeins caught my eye.

Some will be house socks and some wear anywhere socks and a few “work” socks for the Mr.

They won’t all be for me. I have the sock recipients in mind with every skein. AND I have a wonderful lace pattern I want to knit again. I used the pattern once before with a multi colour yarn and I think  they turned out beautifully. That would be the pair of socks you see pictured at the top of my blog, and if you care to check out the knitting basket they are some where in there… lol. Oh yes and there has to be a few cable pattern socks. I love cable knitting too but haven’t tried it with socks, that will be a new one for me.

Grey Socks

Grey Socks

I should have the Grey socks finished by this evening and ready to start on a new pair..I think another pair of work socks !

Thank you for dropping by, I hope you have a warm and cozy week of stitching and creating …..Izz
